Hatched in 1994, Dash, the Harris Hawk, was owned by a local licensed and trained falconer. Harris Hawks are indigenous to Central America but can be found as far north as central Texas. Dash was highly trained and hunted with his owner in competitions and participated in educational presentations. While on a training exercise with a new dog; Dash sustained a severe head injury. Nursed back to health, he was diagnosed with permanent damage including blindness to one eye and motor skill impairment. Unable to hunt or perform, in 1999, we were sought out to provide long term care.
Dash lived at the farm for 1-1/2 years. Working with and educated by his owner, we provided Dash with a safe environment and interaction which, enabled him to adapt his depth perception. Soon, he was able to make his appointed target and work his 'locking' talon to 'capture' his prey.
One day, in 2001, Dash suffered a seizure and passed away within an hour. His condition upon arrival was one of a 'day to day' basis and he did well with the injuries he'd received. He has since been preserved and still educates visitors about the importance of environmental and species conservation.
