Sanctuary & Special Resident Stories
The Old Poor Farm Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit organization (31-1771436) operated solely by dedicated volunteers. We provide long term care for disabled animals and birds due to birth defects, abuse, accidents and neglect. These animals live long full lives at the Old Poor Farm with loving care given to accommodate their special needs, good nutrition and positive socialization.
People ask: "How many birds and animals do you have?". There is, on average, about 250 birds and animals on our 4 acre homestead. That may seem crowded to you, but we count each creature (including pigeons and goldfish in the reflecting pond). No animal is overlooked.
Our main purpose is to see that every creature, big or small, is cared for. This includes those animals deemed not "adoptable" or meet "acceptable" standards. There is not one creature on this Earth that is perfect; especially humans. And yet, it is humans that put these 'standards' upon animals and birds. There is not one 'show quality' animal or bird on this farm. (This is not due to their appearance or structure-we would never subject them to such stringent guidelines) Each animal's characteristic is unique and embraced. We are a no-kill facility so some of these animals have been here for some time. There is no time limit for residency.
Our volunteers get no pay. They offer up their time and efforts purely with love for the animals and history here on the farm. The land is privately owned and the use donated for the sanctuary. Your donations (100%) go directly for the animals; food, vet care, and shelter repairs.
We work with all animal agencies to ensure each creature is with the most knowledgeable caretakers. We have taken a few dogs and cats in the past (that were severely disabled), but do not have the facilities to house a large population. We work with our local Humane Society on these species. We focus on exotic, wildlife and domestic species of birds and animals that our local shelter cannot care for. We've taken in animals and birds from in and out of state when needed. Working with other agencies; shelters, rescues, state and federal agencies, we do our best that no creature is needlessly destroyed because it is not 'perfect'.
